In this case Lutheran Worship refers specifically to a Lutheran hymnal used during services. The hymnal is a revision of previous versions and in general was not widely accepted. A new version was since published in 2006 blending elements of the earlier hymnals and the Lutheran Worship.
The book “Lutheran Worship” includes the liturgy for Divine Service I, Divine Service II, Divine Service III, Matins, Vespers, and Compline. Of course there are also services for Holy Baptism and Confirmation. Readers can also appreciate Morning Prayer, Evening Prayer, the Bidding Prayer, the Litany, the Lectionary, Luther's Small Catechism, Confession (Individual and Corporate), and a collection of Psalms. There are approximately 11 canticles and chants, 491 hymns, and 18 spiritual songs included in the Lutheran Worship.
Why is it important to discuss a hymnal used in Lutheran churches?
The practice of Lutherans is primarily liturgical, using classic uniform readings. Thus a hymnal allows for consistent hymns to be sung in the right spirit and tone and timing of the service. This hymnal actually created some dissension. There were some who did not like the revised melodies or the modified verses. So only a portion of Lutherans actually used this “blue book” (the previous hymnal referred to as the “red book”.
The 2006 version is called the Lutheran Service Book intended to replace all previous versions.
