Lutheranism and Martin Luther

Welcome to Palm Beach Nativity Lutheran, a vibrant community of believers worshiping through liturgy and praise.  Discover more about what it means to be a Lutheran Christian by attending, participating, and studying with us.

What is the origin of “Lutheran”?

Martin Luther began the movement referred to as Lutheranism in the 16th century. The Protestant Reformation of the Western church was a result of his writings, which were widely read.  Luther's hymns, including the widely recognized "A Mighty Fortress is Our God", inspired congregational singing within Christian churches.

The writings of the Lutheran Church are contained in the Book of Concord. Official Lutheranism is part of Orthodox Protestantism, along with Catholic and Greek Churches that accept the authority of the Scriptures and of the three most ancient creeds (the Apostles' Creed, the Nicene Creed, and the Athanasian Creed). Lutheranism also recognizes six specific confessions:
Unaltered Augsburg Confession (1530), Apology of the Augsburg Confession (1531), Luther's Large Catechism (1529), Luther's Catechism for Children (1529), the Articles of Smalkald (1537), and the Form of Concord (1577).
Lutheranism dates from October 1517 when Luther affixed his theses to the church door of the castle of Wittenberg.

Almost 500 years have passed and still today you can witness the deep faith in scripture and worship inspired by Martin Luther and carried on in the Lutheran denomination.
